Thank you for your interest in working for Crawley Borough Council at a time of significant change and opportunity, where you can make a real difference to the town and its people.

This is a council and a town that punches above its weight. Over 75 years on from its establishment as a new town, Crawley is now a regional powerhouse with 120,000 residents, a £6bn+ economy and Gatwick Airport, the world’s busiest single runway airport.

We are inviting applications for the role of Head of Law & Governance (Monitoring Officer). This position is pivotal to guiding our organisation through the coming years.

You will be joining at a critical time. In February 2024, the council declared a Housing Emergency, recognising the related challenges of the scale of temporary accommodation, the imposition of water neutrality restrictions, population migration and the impact on our finances. A year later, the Government made a statutory request to local authorities in Sussex to develop proposals for Local Government Reorganisation, with new unitary authorities coming into effect in 2028.

We can therefore offer you perhaps a unique set of challenges and experiences, working within a dedicated and collaborative team, in a context where the role of the Monitoring Officer is more important than ever. You will be at the heart of our strategic decision-making, working closely with elected members, the Chief Executive, and the wider leadership team to ensure that our governance is resilient, transparent, and future-ready.

Within this dynamic environment, we’re looking for a talented and experienced leader to help us navigate these challenges.

If you are passionate about public service and committed to ethical, transparent governance, then I can promise this is a council that shares those values.
